By 2014, Neal became a regular contributor to Hawaiʻi Public Radio’s news department. His reports, called "Pacific News Minute,” focused on his area of expertise and stories of political or military developments in and around the Pacific Rim. The ongoing vignette series aired on both of Hawaiʻi Public Radio and during the national news magazine programs “Morning Edition” and “All Things Considered." The show covered events occurring in and issues surrounding Asia and Oceania that were under-represented in the American media. Before his death, he had intended to create hour-long programs to cover the geopolitics of the entire Pacific Basin.
